Fransa’da Steven Spielberg’le eş değer tutulan Luc Besson, hızlı kurgusu olan, çok stilize ve yüksek bütçeli filmlerin yönetmeni olarak adını duyurdu. 1959 yılında Paris’te dünyaya gelen yönetmen, çocukluğunu dalgıç öğretmeni olan anne babasıyla birlikte Yunanistan ve Yugoslavya arasında mekik dokuyarak geçirdi. 10 yaşındayken evcilleştirilmemiş yunuslarla yüzmeye başlayan Besson, ailesinin etkisi altında kalarak dalgıçlığa merak saldı.
Daha sonraki yıllarda memeli hayvanların biyolojik yapısıyla ilgilenen yönetmen, denize ve yunuslara olan tutkusundan ötürü marina biyologu olmaya karar verdi. Fakat 17 yaşında geçirdiği dalgıçlık kazasından sonra bir daha dalamayan Bresson, eski sağlığına kavuştuktan sonra okulunu bitirmek için Paris’e gitti.
“ The Fifth Element ” adlı filminin ana fikrini daha bu yıllarda kafasında oluşturan yönetmen, filmin öyküsünü bir gece rüyasında gördüğü garip olayların etkisinde kalarak yazdı. İkinci sınıftan itibaren ilgisini tamamıyla televizyon ve sinemaya odaklayan Besson, giderek şehir yaşamına alışmaya başladı. Denize duyduğu tutkuyu kamerayla gidermeye çalışan Besson, okul dışındaki zamanını film izleyerek geçirdi. Bu sıralarda Süper-8 filmin sunduğu olanakları tanımakla uğraşan yönetmen, 19 yaşında Hollywood’un yolunu tuttu. Buradaki ilk üç yılında bir yandan çalışırken bir yandan da Amerikan film endüstrisinin naıl işlediğini yakından takip etti. Hollywood yapımı filmlerden o kadar çok etkilendi ki, kariyeri boyunca yaptığı filmlerde bu etki fazlasıyla gözlemlendi. Hatta Fransa’da Amerikan filmleri yapan yönetmen olarak gösterilmeye başlandı.
Bir süre orduda görev aldıktan sonra üç yıl boyunca yönetmen asistanlığı yapan Besson, kendi çapında deneysel çalışmalar gerçekleştirdi. Filmlerindeki müziklerin oldukça güçlü ve tematik olmasıyla tanınan yönetmen, çeşitli müzik kayıtları yapmaya başladı. Birkaç kısa metrajlı projeye imza attıktan sonra 1983 yılında ilk ciddi uzun metrajlı denemesi olan “ Le Dernier Combat ” ( The Last Battle ) adlı filmini çekti. İlginç bir kamera çalışması olan ve sessiz çekilen film, Avoriaz Bilim Kurgu Film Festivali’nde iki ödül birden kazandı.
1985 yılında “ Subway ” adlı ikinci filmini gerçekleştiren genç yönetmen, tamamıyla Paris metrosunda geçen mizahi suç dramı olan bu filmle Fransa’da büyük bir üne kavuştu. Sinema dili olarak geleneksel olana taban tabana zıt bir aksiyon filmi olan “ Subway ”, Fransa’nın en önde gelen kült filmlerinden biri olarak kabul edildi. Üç yıl sonra “ The Big Blue ” adlı filmine imza atan Besson, dalgıçlığa olan tutkusunun bu filmle ekrana yansıttı.
Okul yıllarında yazdığı “ Le Petit Siren ” adlı hikayesini senaryolaştıran Besson, küçükken tanıdığı İtalyan dalgıç Jacques Mayol’un etkisiyle, nefes almadan kendini denizin mavi sularına bırakan dalgıçların yaşamını ele alan esprili bir görsel şölen izlettirdi. Filmde denize tutkun olan bir adamın tutkusuyla sevdiği kadın arasında ikileme düşmesi konu edildi. Besson için oldukça kişisel bir yeri olan film, Avrupa’nın yanı sıra Amerika’da da oldukça başarılı bulundu.
1990 yılında en çok bilinen filmine imza atan yönetmen, “ Nikita ” ile hükümet adına adam öldüren profesyonel bir katilin yaşamını yansıttı. Yönetmen, daha sonra zeki ve seksi kadın Nikita’yı canlandıran Anne Parillaud ile evlendi. 1993 yılında Amerika’da bir kablolu kanalda gösterilen “ Point of No Return ” adlı bir dizinin çekimlerini üstlenen Besson, ertesi yıl ikinci büyük çıkışını gerçekleştirdi. Başrollerinde Jean Reno, Gary Oldman ve Natalie Portman’ın yer aldığı “ The Professional ” ( Leon ) aldığı film, ailesini öldürenlerden intikam almaya çalışan küçük bir kızla profesyonel bir katilin arasındaki sıcak ilişkiyi anlatıyor.
1997 yılında bilim kurguya olan merakını sinemaya yansıtmaya karar veren Besson, “ The Fifth Element ” adlı oldukça yüksek bir bütçesi olan bir fantastik bilim kurgu filmi çekti. Başrollerinde Milla Jovovich ve Bruce Willis gibi yıldızların yer aldığı film, yönetmene Cesar ödülünün yanı sıra pek ödül getirdi. Kariyerinde çok farklı türlere yer veren yönetmen, iki yıl sonra “ The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc ” adlı tarihi bir film yaptı. Filmde baş karakter Joan of Arc’ı müstakbel karısı Milla Jovovich canlandırdı.
Yönetmenliğin yanı sıra yazarlık ve yapımcılık da yapan Besson, pek çok filmin yapımcılığını üstlendi. Özellikle Hollywood sinemasına karşı Fransız sinemasını ayakta tutmaya özen gösteren yönetmen, Fransa’daki sinema endüstrisinin geliştirmek için Hollywood kurallarını uygulamaya çalıştı. 1994 yapımı “ Antarctica ” adlı belgesel ile Gary Oldman’ın 1997 yapımı “ Nil by Mouth ” adlı filmi bunlardan ikisi.
