Francis Ford Coppola, 1939 doğumlu, 5 Oscarlı Amerikalı film yönetmeni, yapımcısı ve senaryo yazarı. En çok “Godfather” üçlemesi ve “Apocalypse Now” adlı filmleriyle tanınır.
Francis Ford Coppola, 7 Nisan 1939 yılında; İtalyan göçmeni ailenin ortanca çocuğu olarak Michigan’da dünyaya geldi. Erken yaşta geçirdiği çocuk felci hastalığı nedeniyle, dışarı çıkmak yerine çocukluğunu, evde kendi hazırladığı kuklalarla gösteriler hazırlayarak geçirdi. 10 yaşındayken, babasının 8mm’lik kamerasıyla filmler çekmeye başladı. University of California ‘da sinema okumadan önce, Hofstra University’de tiyatro eğitimi aldı. Sayısız kısa film çekti. California Üniversitesi Film Departmanındayken, sonradan en ünlü yapıtlarından “Apocalypse Now” adlı filminde müziklerini kullanacağı,
Jim Morrison ile tanıştı. 1960lı yılların başında, Roger Corman ile düşük bütçeli filmler çekerek ve senaryolar yazarak, profesyonel sinema kariyerine başladı. Dikkate değer ilk sinema filmi, Corman için yaptığı “Dementia 13” idi.
Yaptığı filmler arasında kendisine en çok ünü getiren, “The Godfather” serisi oldu. Ailesinden bir kaç ismi de bu üçlemeye dahil eden Coppola, büyük bir başarıya imza attı ve sinemadaki kariyerini sağlamlaştırmış oldu. “Godfather II”nin ardından çektiği “Apocalypse Now” adlı filmi de büyük ilgi gören yönetmen bu filmin ardından : “ Ormandaydık, kalabalıktık, oldukça fazla paraya ve malzemeye ulaşabiliyorduk ve yavaş yavaş, çıldırdık.” şeklinde yaptığı açıklamayla, çekimler esnasında yaşadıkları psikolojik sıkıntıyı anlattı.
Francis Coppola’nın ünlü bir besteci ve müzisyen olan babası, oğluna bir çok film müziği yaptı. Coppola’nın 1986 yılında bir sürat motoru kazasında hayatını kaybeden büyük oğlu Gian-Carlo Coppola da yaşamını yitirmeden önce sinema kariyerinin ilk basamaklarındaydı. Ünlü yönetmenin diğer oğlu Roman Coppola da film yapımcısı ve klip yönetmeni olarak babasının izini sürdürmekte.
